Eating Problems
Emotions are the root cause of eating problems. Eating problems frequently occur along with other problems such as depression and anxiety. Eating problems often get worse the longer they go untreated. The lack of nutrition associated with starving and/or bingeing can harm the body's organs and, in severe cases, lead to death. The most common problem, however, is overeating. Eating problems are a result of many factors including appetite, food availability, family, peer and cultural practices. Eating problems are serious behaviors and may include extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. Eating problems are not due to a failure of will or behavior. Rather, they are real treatable problems in which certain unhealthy patterns of eating seem to take on a life of their own. In addition, people who suffer from eating problems can experience a wide range of physical health complications, including serious heart conditions and kidney failure which may lead to death. Recognition of eating problems as real and treatable, therefore, is critically important. Some people purposefully starve themselves, despite their hunger. They tend to be very good in sports, school, and work, often seeking perfection. Some people stop eating in order to gain a feeling of control over their lives, while others may do so to rebel against parents and other loved ones. Symptoms associated with under-eating include:
Under-eating can be treated and a healthy weight restored. The sooner it is treated, the better the outcomes are likely to be. For people suffering with a binge/purge problem, large amounts of food are eaten all at once, and then vomited. The vomiting is triggered by a fear of weight gain or stomach pain. People with bulimia also use laxatives, diuretics, and vigorous exercise to purge themselves. Although people suffering from this binge/purge problem are often underweight, they may also appear to have a normal body weight. Common symptoms of this problem include:
Because of frequent vomiting, people with binge/purge syndrome expose themselves to higher than average amounts of stomach acid, which over time can lead to physical problems. These may include a sore or bleeding throat, stomach problems, heartburn, bloating, swollen glands in the cheeks and face, and tooth decay. Though no one cause exists for this problem, it is often a reaction to stress and anxiety. Eating problems have emotional turmoil as their root cause.
