Implementing Positive Changes Through The Subconscious Mind |
Anxiety
Most people will experience some degree of anxiety at some point in their lives. Some fears and anxieties occur as a part of life, warning us to take protective action. However extreme anxiety can overwhelm people with a fear that is chronic and unremitting. Tormented by panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, flashbacks of traumatic events, nightmares or countless frightening physical symptoms, some people with extreme anxiety withdraw themselves totally from society. When anxiety reaches the level of being diagnosed as a 'disorder,' it is considered the most common mental illness in America. More than 19 million American adults, teens and children are affected by these debilitating illnesses each year. Once diagnosed as a 'disorder,' treatment by a licensed mental health professional is required. There are numerous symptoms and levels of anxiety. General anxiety includes worrisome thoughts and tension about everyday routine life events and activities. People may anticipate the worst even though there is little reason to expect it. In addition, there may be physical symptoms such as fatigue, trembling, muscle tension, headache and more. It is very common for anxiety to accompany feelings of depression, weight gain or loss, substance abuse, or other negative behaviors. There are two major types of phobias: social phobia and specific phobia. People with social phobia have an overwhelming and disabling fear of scrutiny, embarrassment, or humiliation in social situations, which leads to avoidance of many potentially pleasurable and meaningful activities. People with specific phobia experience extreme, disabling and irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger; the fear leads to avoidance of objects or situations and can cause people to limit their lives unnecessarily. Symptoms that occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event are considered 'post-traumatic stress.' Victims can suffer nightmares, flashbacks, depression, numbing of emotions, anger, irritability, and become easily distracted and startled. Anxiety often appears when other illnesses are present, such as cancer or heart disease. In many such instances, the accompanying anxiety will also need to be treated along with the physical health issue in order for there to substantive relief. Some extreme symptoms may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal distress, feelings of unreality, and fear of dying There may be unwanted thoughts or compulsive behaviors that seem impossible to stop or control. Most people successfully control their symptoms of anxiety and fear through sheer will power and self discipline.
